The ancient city Bosra, found some 150 kilometers south of Damascus, is a living evidence of successive civilizations of different times. Inclduing Islamic, Roman and Byzantine eras. There has been found references to this city as old as 14 centuries B.C. Bosra was an important stop-over for pilgrims on their way to Mecca until the 17th century.
The minaret of the mosque of Omar is the oldest standing squre minaret. The mosque itself is also one of the oldest standing mosque. There are inscriptions on the wall dating back to 720 AD.
